NetApp SolidFire eSDS – Product Brief

NetApp SolidFire eSDS (Enterprise Software Defined Storage) is a scale-out, block storage solution comprised of the NetApp SolidFire Element operating system running on industry standard servers and flash storage devices. Like the SolidFire scale-out all-flash arrays, eSDS pools physical storage capacity on each node, providing native iSCSI or fibre channel access for hosts connected to this virtual SAN. NetApp eSDS clusters contain a minimum of four nodes, expanding to 100 nodes, with a total capacity in the petabyte range, based on configuration of individual nodes.

SolidFire was designed for a scale-out, all-flash architecture, running on bare-metal server nodes with commodity SSDs and incorporating a log-structured file system to control flash wear and management overhead. The Element OS also has integrated data reduction and advanced metadata handling, both required to support the distribution of data across multiple nodes without impacting performance or uptime. Together, these, and other design elements give eSDS its impressive performance and flexibility.

NetApp SolidFire’s “Helix” data protection scheme distributes two redundant copies of each data block across all nodes in the cluster, ensuring data resiliency without RAID overhead and enabling non-disruptive upgrades. SolidFire provides native snapshot-based backup and restore functionality compatible with any object store or device that has an S3- or SWIFT-compatible API. SolidFire includes synchronous, asynchronous and snapshot replication options and the ability to pair a single cluster with up to four other clusters for failover protection.
