Teradata Acquires Stemma to Expand VantageCloud Data Platform Capabilities

Analyst Take: This is a very important strategic move for Teradata as the company expands beyond a data warehouse offering to increase its position in the developing AI space. The structure for AI development is rapidly coalescing into Data Platforms, which comprise managing the different sources of data, data conditioning and transformation by data engineers, and even controlling workflow for the AI algorithms by data scientists. As this area becomes more competitive, capabilities required for the Data Platform are expanding.

With the acquisition, Teradata has added more capabilities to its VantageCloud Data Platform, enhancing its position in AI. Notably, the primary function gained from the Stemma acquisition is a Data Catalog to enable acquiring and managing data from external sources, beyond the Teradata warehouse information. Stemma has a long list of integrations for access to other sources of data that are critical for feeding the AI models. The Data Catalog also provides Data Governance for the different sources, which is necessary for assurances of data quality and source. Another extremely valuable feature for Teradata in its development and expansion of its Data Platform is the search capability and metadata management that Stemma has included in the Data Catalog.

Stemma should be a great acquisition for Teradata – expanding the company’s Data Platform capabilities in what is becoming a very competitive area. There does not appear to be overlap between the Stemma Data Catalog and what Teradata VantageCloud has now, enabling faster integration.
