SC23 Recap: Quantum

Analyst Take: Not to be confused with Quantum computing (which also had a notable presence at SC23), Quantum―the company― was a noteworthy attendee of SC, the big international conference for high-performance computing. Although the company has been present at SC conferences in years past, this year was an opportunity for Quantum to distinguish itself and highlight its newest solution. Familiar solutions such as ActiveScale and Quantum’s tape solutions are certainly still relevant to the conversations around HPC and AI, but the focus for the future is on Quantum’s latest Myriad system.

Announced earlier this year, Quantum Myriad is an all-flash, scale-out file and object storage solution that is built to handle both the scale and performance requirements of modern unstructured data workloads. The system is fully containerized and built with flexibility and simplicity in mind.

Key to Quantum’s vision for Myriad is how the solution can integrate with Quantum’s other offerings to provide a full data lifecycle solution for handling hot and cold data tiers. Myriad provides the all-flash, cloud-native architecture needed for hot, primary data, while Quantum ActiveScale provides a highly scalable, low-cost solution with the capability to tier data to tape. Unifying the solutions is Quantum’s automated data movement and monitoring capabilities with Quantum Cloud Based Analytics.

The addition of Myriad rounds out Quantum’s portfolio and gives it the capability to scale from more performance-intensive hot data needs to the existing cold data and archive capabilities that Quantum has addressed with ActiveScale and tape. The combination of these solutions provides the capabilities needed to handle the full lifecycle of modern unstructured data workloads such as AI.
