SolarWinds Avior: Goal-Driven Agentic AI for Hybrid IT Ops

SolarWinds Avior: Goal-Driven Agentic AI for Hybrid IT Ops

SolarWinds has launched Avior, a standalone agentic AI system that lets IT teams define goals, coordinate specialized agents, and track measurable outcomes across hybrid and self-hosted environments. Avior pairs AI reasoning with a deterministic execution framework built on risk-tiered autonomy, approval gates, and full audit trails. The launch raises important questions about how Avior relates to the SW1 agentic platform SolarWinds announced in April, and how the company work through a leadership transition while asking security teams to grant write access to network devices.

What Is Covered in This Article:

  • SolarWinds’ launch of Avior, a standalone agentic AI system built on the SolarWinds Platform
  • The six operational outcomes Avior targets at launch and the guardrails SolarWinds wraps around them
  • How Avior relates to SolarWinds’ April SW1 announcement, its leadership transition, and the competitive field in agentic IT operations

The News: On October 14, 2026, SolarWinds announced SolarWinds Avior, a standalone, goal-oriented agentic AI system for mission-critical IT environments. Built on the SolarWinds Platform, Avior lets IT teams define goals, coordinate specialized agents, and track progress toward measurable outcomes across self-hosted and SaaS environments, with third-party systems connected through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). At launch, Avior targets six outcomes: correlating alerts into single incidents, auditing devices against a policy baseline, detecting and remediating configuration drift, scheduling configuration backups, tracking capacity and cost, and retiring stale assets. The announcement was made by Cullen Childress, Interim CEO and Chief Product Officer, following Sudhakar Ramakrishna’s departure on September 30, 2026.

SolarWinds Avior: Goal-Driven Agentic AI for Hybrid IT Ops

Analyst Take: Avior is a sensible first move into agentic IT operations for SolarWinds. Five of its six launch use cases are infrastructure hygiene tasks with known good states, which means an agent’s work can be checked and undone. The harder questions are about trust, roadmap clarity, and how far Avior’s autonomy can extend beyond the SolarWinds estate.

SolarWinds Avior Starts With the Work Engineers Avoid

Five of the six launch use cases are infrastructure hygiene: compliance audits, configuration drift, configuration backups, capacity tracking, and stale asset cleanup. That reflects SolarWinds’ long history in network configuration management, and it is a sensible place for an autonomous agent to start. Each of these tasks has a known good state, so an agent’s work can be checked and undone. Restoring a last-known-good switch configuration is a far safer first autonomous action than rewriting a routing policy, and it is the kind of first-line work that rarely gets done consistently by busy teams. The release emphasizes measurable outcomes but includes no measured results. Radiology Partners is the named reference customer and describes faster triage, without figures. Buyers should ask the guided onboarding customers for numbers.

“Deterministic” Describes SolarWinds Avior’s Execution, Not Its Reasoning

SolarWinds pairs AI reasoning with what it calls a deterministic execution framework. The language model still decides what is wrong and which step to take next, and that part stays probabilistic. The determinism lives in the guardrails: risk tiers, approval gates, least-privilege tool access, audit trails, and rollback. That is the right architecture for production infrastructure. Buyers should read “deterministic” as predictable actions, not predictable diagnosis, and test how often Avior’s root cause matches what their engineers find. They should also ask whose permissions apply when a long-running goal acts without a user initiating each step, and how Avior resolves conflicting goals, such as capacity headroom versus cost.

SolarWinds Needs a Clearer Story for Avior and SW1

In April, SolarWinds launched SW1, an agentic AI teammate built on the SolarWinds Agentic Framework, with a roadmap that included reducing alert noise, strengthening compliance, and autonomous issue resolution. Avior now delivers those outcomes as a separately branded standalone product, and its release does not mention SW1. Customers who planned around SW1 six months ago need to know whether Avior replaces it, extends it, or runs alongside it. That clarity matters more during a leadership transition, with an interim CEO in place at a company Turn/River Capital took private in 2025.

Trust Is SolarWinds’ Hardest Sell and Its Strongest Pitch

An agent with write access to network devices is a high-value target. Because SolarWinds was the vector for the 2020 Sunburst supply-chain attack, security teams will scrutinize any SolarWinds component that holds broad privileged access. SolarWinds has responded by making governance the center of the product: approval gates for risky actions, data masking, no training on customer data, and for self-hosted estates, data routed through Platform Connect rather than straight to a model. Security teams should review Avior’s credential model and audit records before approving any write access.

SolarWinds Avior Competes Where Cloud-Native Tools Are Thinnest

Dynatrace, Datadog, ServiceNow, and PagerDuty are all building agentic operations capabilities. SolarWinds’ advantage is depth in hybrid and self-hosted estates, especially networks, where cloud-native observability vendors have less coverage and where many of its long-standing customers run. Operations teams should start Avior on configuration backup and drift goals with every action set to require approval, measure accuracy for a quarter, and only then raise autonomy on the tasks it has handled correctly.

What to Watch:

  • Leadership and roadmap: whether a permanent CEO appointment reconciles the Avior and SW1 roadmaps into one coherent agentic story for customers
  • Outcome evidence: whether guided onboarding customers publish measurable results that justify broader deployment and higher autonomy tiers
  • Avior pricing: what commercial terms look like once Avior moves beyond the guided onboarding program and how that affects adoption across the installed base
  • MCP write access: whether Avior can act on non-SolarWinds systems through MCP, not just read from them, determining whether it orchestrates the full estate or only the SolarWinds portion
