Quantum Announces General Availability of Myriad

Analyst Take: Quantum has announced the general availability of its latest storage offering, Quantum Myriad. Myriad, which was announced earlier this year, is a software defined, scale-out file and object storage platform. This solution has been available to early access customers and is now generally available.

The release of Myriad is notable for Quantum as it represents the company’s future-looking strategy for unstructured data workloads. The Myriad system is a shift from Quantum’s more traditional tape, archive, and content repository solutions, instead offering a high-performance offering. This type of offering is well aligned with many emerging use cases, including AI and cloud native applications, which typically rely on large-scale file or object data, yet require primary storage type performance.

Myriad is built on a containerized, cloud native architecture, and is designed for all-flash hardware. The system will support NFS, SMB, and S3, however, the initial rollout will be limited to NFS file storage, with the other protocols being added later. The solution is designed to scale out to support the large data requirements of unstructured storage while maintaining performance. The Myriad architecture consists of load balancer nodes, NVMe storage nodes, and a deployment node, all connected via a 100GbE RDMA fabric. An overview of this architecture can be seen in the following figure.

The general availability of Myriad provides great momentum for Quantum in broadening its market. While the initial version of Myriad will be limited compared with the planned functionality, the solution will continue to add the roadmap items—including object storage support, GPU Direct, greater scalability, and many advanced features—over time, creating a very competitive solution for modern object and file workloads.
