SAP Business Transformation Portfolio Expands With Addition of LeanIX

The News: SAP is acquiring LeanIX, an enterprise architecture management (EAM) software vendor, to broaden SAP’s business transformation product line and give customers new tools to incorporate AI-enabled process optimization. SAP Business Transformation Portfolio Expands With Addition of LeanIX

Analyst Take: SAP’s business transformation product offerings for its global customers will get a solid boost with the company’s acquisition of LeanIX, which has been a strategic partner of SAP and its SAP Signavio division for a decade. LeanIX plays an important role for some 1,000 customers today with its software as a service (SaaS) application. The application gives enterprises an overview of their installed applications so that companies can monitor applications to check whether they are up to date or approaching the end of their operational lifecycles, to plan and implement target states, and to allow businesses to better plan their architectural roadmaps. In my view, this tool is important and valuable in helping enterprise IT leaders to better watch over the applications that are contributing to the success of their operations.

Another major capability of LeanIX is that it provides a foundation for AI-enabled process optimization within enterprises, which is a growing concern for enterprises. A new AI assistant recently unveiled by LeanIX helps businesses introduce the power of generative AI into their enterprise architecture management strategies, which is a timely addition. The new AI assistant increases automation today while providing a solid foundation for LeanIX customers to bring in IT intelligent recommendation engines and more capabilities in future business transformation plans, the company said.

The terms of the SAP and LeanIX deal, which was announced September 7, were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2023, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

How LeanIX Fits SAP’s Business Transformation Portfolio

By acquiring LeanIX, SAP is moving to add generative AI and other critical new features to help customers make their business transformation strategies more effective. I like this acquisition because I believe that it will help SAP achieve its goal of helping customers to navigate the constant business changes that can affect them and dramatically improve their business processes.

Another major benefit of this approach is that LeanIX complements SAP’s Signavio business process management suite of applications, which will expand business transformation capabilities to existing and new customers. This expansion will be particularly important as powerful new AI capabilities continue to be added to the products. I applaud when vendors empower their customers to improve and futureproof their business processes. This approach makes a lot of sense and delivers important flexibility.

Other benefits of LeanIX include enabling customers to overlay their operational process dependencies and to map the impacts of potential transformations on their IT landscapes, which are also valuable and forward-looking. These LeanIX transformational capabilities can be used together with SAP Signavio Process Transformation Suite, RISE with SAP, and SAP Business Technology Platform, giving SAP customers more ways to accomplish their business transformation goals. The LeanIX offerings can also be used to complement non-SAP infrastructures.

What It Means: Bringing LeanIX Into SAP’s Business Transformation Portfolio

This deal is a smart move by SAP to incorporate LeanIX and its EAM capabilities into the expanding SAP business transformation product line. At the same time, this acquisition helps further the value and importance of SAP products for customers around the world.

Giving enterprises a comprehensive, real-time view of their critical business applications and operational processes is important as companies dive further into business transformation strategies to stay ahead of the competition.

I believe it is exciting when leading technology companies such as SAP take initiatives like this one to show that they want to lead and change when new technologies such as AI and generative AI appear in the marketplace. By better serving its customers through this acquisition, SAP is again leading by example.

The vision behind everything in Futurum’s Custom Research practice is this: research should show you what is happening, what comes next, and what to do about it. It should be personal to each audience, easy for people to grasp, and structured so LLMs can reason over it accurately. And it should be fast and turnkey; you want answers now, not another project to carry for quarters.

Whether you are defining business, channel, or go-to-market strategy; evaluating vendors or justifying ROI; or commissioning research to fill an emerging market need, we have your back, with a program that answers your questions with the objectivity and credibility to drive real decisions.

To do it, we bring unmatched data to bear: Futurum research, surveys, and market projections; validated market feeds; ETR’s 15 years of insight from 10,000 technology decision-makers; G2’s buyer and user data; and what our analysts hear every day. Add leading primary collection, from AI-moderated voice interviews to surveys and analyst-led interviews, all turnkey, and every project comes out credible, nuanced, and actionable.

And we don’t just drop the results in your lap. For internal work, we provide analyst-led sessions, interactive dashboards, and a range of formats. For market-facing work, Futurum delivers turnkey activation and amplification that actually gets seen, by people and by LLMs, through our media and share of voice. This is research that moves decisions and markets.

We will meet you wherever you are, from a fast-turn brief to a multi-year program, and shape the work to your goals, timeline, and budget. The right program for your moment.

If any of this is useful, I would love to talk.
