HPE Acquires OpsRamp to Ramp up HPE GreenLake ITOM Capabilities

The News: Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire OpsRamp, an IT operations management (ITOM) company that monitors, observes, automates, and manages IT infrastructure, cloud resources, workloads and applications for hybrid and multi-cloud environments, including hyperscalers. HPE Acquires OpsRamp to Ramp up HPE GreenLake ITOM Capabilities

Analyst Take: HPE is demonstrating its full commitment in using acquisition to continually optimize its HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform by agreeing to buy OpsRamp. The OpsRamp acquisition shows HPE is on an M&A roll following on the Axis Security, Athonet, and Pachyderm deals since the beginning of its fiscal year.

The addition of OpsRamps observability, monitoring, and remediation capabilities aims to broaden HPE GreenLake’s hybrid and multi-cloud ecosystem influence and multi-vendor integration acumen. From our view, HPE is better positioned to remove complexity resulting from the tool sprawl customers confront as they use on-premises toolsets in combination with CSP toolsets. Through comprehensive data collection and monitoring across hybrid and multi-cloud environments, customers can increase the resiliency and performance of applications regardless of their deployment distribution and location. Plus, OpsRamp already delivers a hybrid digital operations management platform that supports thousands of customers globally.

We find the demand for organization-wide cross-collaboration is swiftly expanding, encompassing a wider array of personas including DevOps, site reliability engineering (SRE), platform engineers, and data architects, to improve processes and accelerate time-to-market through unified data. By integrating OpsRamp’s hybrid digital operations management solution with HPE GreenLake and the backing of HPE services, organizations gain a more compelling solution to reduce the operational complexity of multi-vendor and multi-cloud IT environments across their public cloud, colocations, and on-premises implementations.

From our view, the OpsRamps acquisition provides the discovery, monitoring, automation, and event resolution with artificial intelligence (AI) for IT operations, rapidly elevating HPE’s AIOps credentials across the ITOM market with AIOps becoming essential to automate and administer multi-vendor computing, networking, and storage capabilities in full alignment with cloud resources, containers, virtual machines, and applications.

We discern that manual IT processes will simply not meet such heterogenous cloud demands while also reducing operating expenses, bolstering incident remediation with comprehensive observability, and improving the IT experience for users. We see the move is of key importance to raising market awareness of HPE GreenLake AIOps portfolio capabilities as the hyperscalers (i.e., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, OCI), hybrid cloud players such as VMware, IBM/Red Hat, and HPE rivals like Dell and Lenovo have all zeroed in on AIOps as integral to their overall cloud portfolio development and marketing strategies. The time is now for HPE to win more mind share in the AIOps category to gain more business and bolster its presence across the hybrid and multi-cloud realms.

HPE Acquires OpsRamps: Key Takeaways

We anticipate that the OpsRamp acquisition will be smooth and swift as OpsRamp was already part of Hewlett Packard Pathfinder’s venture capital investment initiative from 2020. As a strategic partner in the HPE Partner Ready Program, OpsRamp’s AIOps-powered solution is already intertwined with an array of HPE’s solutions and go-to-market strategies. For example, GreenLake Central brings cloud agility and an as-a-service delivery model to infrastructure, applications, and data everywhere, giving mid to large enterprises one experience and one operating model for monitoring and managing applications and infrastructure resources. GreenLake’s OpsConsole combines the OpsRamp platform with HPE Cloud Cruiser to capture and present resource performance with business context in a single view through HPE OneView.

We believe the integration of the OpsRamp platform can simplify infrastructure management by automating IT operations and performing continuous discovery of compute, storage, and networking resources across multi-cloud and in on-premises data centers, enabling HPE to raise the HPE GreenLake platform’s game and profile across the ITOM and hybrid cloud competitive landscapes.
