HPE Expands Alletra Storage Portfolio to Transform File, Block, and Data Protection Services

Analyst Take: HPE deftly debuted its new Alletra portfolio offerings during its HPE GreenLake for Storage event at the company’s Spring, Texas Headquarters. HPE unveiled new file and block offerings underpinned by the HPE Alletra Storage MP architecture, assuring customers can store, manage, and protect all data types from a single unified platform across the hybrid cloud. Taken together, the new data services aim to provide an intuitive cloud operating experience that enables customers to transform data lifecycle management and excel in the era of insight.

The fresh HPE Alletra portfolio push emphasizes allowing enterprise IT decision makers to successfully manage the exponential growth of data, such as file data, and avoid becoming beset with the monumental task of managing, processing, and extracting value from their vast stores of data. This especially includes addressing and resolving complex management, storage infrastructure silos, limited scalability, and uneven productivity issues across edge to cloud environments.

I specifically see the launch of HPE GreenLake for File Storage signifies a game changing move for both HPE and the overall data storage market. The new file storage data services are developed to deliver scale-out, enterprise-grade performance for data-intensive workloads. For more detailed analysis of the HPE GreenLake for File Storage launch please see the companion piece, “HPE and VAST Data Join Forces to Launch HPE GreenLake for File Storage”.

For example, I find HPE GreenLake for File Storage can help enterprises unlock more value from their data by vastly improving capabilities such as faster time to insights and discovery as well as efficient scaling up and out by adding controller and storage nodes as needed. Additionally, enterprises can keep all their data on a single tier of fast and affordable all non-volatile memory express (NVMe) flash at exabyte scale.

HPE Upraises Block Storage and Hybrid Cloud Data Protection Capabilities

I find that the HPE GreenLake for Block Storage support for disaggregated, scale-out block storage with the HPE 100% data availability guarantee can register as an immediate differentiator. The expanded block services provide mission-critical storage with mid-range economics. As such, I anticipate that HPE GreenLake will expand its service level agreements (SLAs) to support a wider array of customer mission-critical applications and blended workloads. Already customers can on-board HPE Alletra Storage MP through an upfront CapEx motion, augmented by HPE GreenLake for Block Storage subscription services.

Moreover, HPE GreenLake now provides a unified approach to disaster recovery and backup & recovery. Specifically, HPE GreenLake for Disaster Recovery uses Zerto technology to automate recovery from any disruption across multiple virtual machines. HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery provides a single catalog to protect hybrid cloud distributions regardless of distribution through features such as policy-based orchestration and unified management.

Key Takeaways: HPE Expands Alletra Storage Portfolio

Reassuringly, the new HPE Alletra storage portfolio moves also reinforce HPE’s commitment to advance the sustainability missions of its customers. For instance, at the event HPE President and CEO Antonio Neri affirmed HPE is focused on optimizing the asset management of its customers at scale by extracting the most value from their data and finding ways to align each customer’s data footprint with their own sustainability goals such as maintaining the path toward achieving net zero emissions.

I believe the expanded HPE Alletra Storage portfolio gains an immediate competitive boost due to the backing of the HPE GreenLake platform, which brings the cloud to wherever customer application and data is distributed and located. All the new HPE GreenLake for Block Storage, HPE GreenLake for Disaster Recovery, and HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery capabilities as well as the new HPE GreenLake for File Storage offering are powered by HPE GreenLake’s access to over 70 cloud services, fulfilling the strategic storage requirements of its customers.
