HPE Announces Updates to Its Data Storage Lineup

Analyst Take: HPE rolled out several data storage announcements including its next installment for the Alletra MP and GreenLake for Block Storage and a Timeless storage program.

Alletra MP, which supports both block and file, gets an update to both hardware and the software IO stack to double the capacity up to 5.6 PBs and full NVMe fabric design. Offered as a CAPEX or as part of GreenLake for Block Storage, the solutions continue to build on the strong AIOPS analytics and support offering. Of note is the cross-stack analytics to examine and use the tools for virtualized environments, including lazy neighbor interruptions, host CPU, and memory metrics as well as to identify latency problems or inactive virtual machines (VMs).

The second part of the announcement was about its GreenLake Block Storage for AWS. Essentially, this solution is HPE’s SDS offering, based on Alletra MP running in AWS. This is managed through the GreenLake Block Storage platform, the same interface used for the on-premises block storage. Ideally, this solution would be used for backup, DR, or testdev use cases. For data protection, there is HPE’s native data protection capability or bring your own favorite platform. Given the simplicity of this system, and its scale from 15 TB to 5.6 PBs, we would expect this offering to strongly appeal to HPE’s midsize and enterprise markets.

HPE has two HCI offerings. For the dHCI (d=disaggregated) offering, HPE announced support for the new Alletra MP. The dHCI solution allows you to scale the compute and storage separately. It is targeted for larger environments, with higher availability requirements (i.e., six nines). The other HCI is SimpliVity, which also got an update with the latest generation server, DL Gen 11. Of course, these are available as a GreenLake Private Cloud Business Edition as VM deployment tools.

The last major announcement was HPE’s Timeless Program. This setup has long been a trend in the market for CAPEX purchases, where with premium support, you can upgrade the controller to the latest version and boost the performance. Upgrades are transparent and data gets to stay in place.

HPE continues to invest in the tools to simplify and bring storage to one platform—that platform being a GreenLake or AIOPs tool based on Insight. This functionality has long been a competitive edge for ease of use and now for extending into public cloud operations.
