IBM Boosts Ceph with 7.0 Release

Analyst Take: IBM recently brought new enhancements to IBM Storage Ceph with its 7.0 release. IBM Storage Ceph, the new name for Red Hat Ceph, was brought into the IBM storage portfolio earlier this year. The latest 7.0 release brings enhancements to security, NFS support, management, and cloud migration. Notable enhancements of the 7.0 release are listed here.

Security and Compliance

A main component of the IBM Storage Ceph 7.0 is the certification of Object Lock for WORM compliance. Ceph’s Object Lock implementation was certified by Cohasset and will meet compliance regulations such as SEC Rules 17a-4(f)(2) and 18a-6(e)(2) and FINRA Rule 4511(c). More on the compliance assessment can be found in a report from Cohasset.

NFS Support

Use of Ceph as a file storage solution is enhanced in the 7.0 release with the addition of NFS support. NFS exports can now be created, edited, and deleted from the Ceph dashboard and CephFS namespaces can be exported over NFS with the NFS Ganesha service.

Management and Dashboard Enhancements

The 7.0 release enhances management and the Ceph dashboard. Management updates include:

  • RADOS Gateway setup and configuration from dashboard
  • Object bucket interaction
  • Multi-site synchronization status
  • CephFS volume management

Archive and Cloud Migration

The RADOS Gateway (RGW) received support for migrating and archiving object data to the cloud. The functionality supports Amazon Web Services (AWS) and other S3 endpoints. Data can be moved based on policy rules, helping organizations manage data lifecycles and archive data for cost savings.

Overall, the 7.0 release brings significant improvements to the storage solution. The key announcements address core concerns for organizations including security and hybrid cloud support. It also improves the flexibility of Ceph in enhancing file support. As the first major release after being repositioned into the IBM portfolio, the IBM Storage Ceph 7.0 release signals a positive trajectory for future development of the platform.
