Storj Releases Storj Select Feature to Meet Customer Compliance Needs

Analyst Take: Storj recently announced a new feature, Storj Select, to boost customers’ ability to meet compliance requirements. Storj is a distributed cloud storage platform that distributes data across various points of presence (or nodes), rather than utilizing a single centralized cloud.

Although for many, the initial reaction to this type of distributed storage approach may be apprehension about reliability, security, and privacy, the way that data is distributed actually bolsters these areas. Storj uses erasure coding across a large number of storage hosts, creating a distribution in which no one node can act as a single point of failure, and no single host has complete access to the data. More information on distributed cloud storage can be found in other The Futurum Group Research Notes, Examining Decentralized Storage and Decentralized Storage in the Battle Against Ransomware.

Even with advantages in data security, organizations―especially those in sectors such as healthcare or finance―often have strict compliance regulations to which they need to adhere, such as HIPAA for health information privacy, SOC2 for accounting and other service information, and GDPR for information privacy in the EU. The new Storj Select feature allows organizations to specify security and compliance requirements, after which an intelligent data distribution model ensures that the data is distributed only to infrastructure that meets the specified requirements.

Alongside announcing the Select feature, Storj announced that CloudWave, a healthcare data security provider working with more than 300 hospitals, has chosen to use the Storj Select solution to provide data compliance. Healthcare involves incredibly sensitive data, with strict compliance regulation; the use of distributed cloud storage in this area is a testament to the data privacy and security capabilities of the technology. Thus this announcement represents a significant stamp of approval for Storj, its new compliance feature, and distributed cloud technology as a whole.

Overall, the focus on selectable compliance with Storj Select is a great move by Storj, one that may boost the overall adoption of decentralized storage technology. It further bolsters the security and data privacy strengths of the solution and should help ease some of the apprehension of organizations unfamiliar with the concept of distributed storage. It additionally opens a broader customer set for Storj, as it now has the capability to attract customers with strict compliance requirements.
