Qualcomm and Sony Agree to Leverage Snapdragon to Power Smartphones

Analyst Take: Sony’s selection of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Mobile Platforms for its next generation of premium and mid-tier smartphones is an excellent strategy for the company. Sony is already leveraging Qualcomm’s current premium tier Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform for its Xperia 1V along with its Xperia 10 V (Snapdragon 695 5G), Xperia 5 IV (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1), Xperia 1 IV (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1) and Xperia 5 III (Snapdragon 888 5G). Although, I should add that we are anxiously awaiting the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform that will be announced in late 2023.

Our view is that it is a solid strategy for Sony to continue to utilize the Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile platform for its future high-end mid-tier devices. Without a doubt, on the camera front alone, Sony’s customers will be delighted by the excellent camera capabilities provided by Qualcomm’s cognitive triple 18-bit ISP coupled with the AI capabilities woven throughout the platform to make those experiences much richer.
