The News: RISC-V computing leader SiFive is aiming to expand its global business opportunities with a newly opened research and development center in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The R&D center, announced this past week, is one of two expansion moves by SiFive, which also unveiled plans to hire more than 100 new employees at the new facility and across the U.K. in the next two years as the company moves to grow its position in the RISC-V chip industry. Analyst Take: RISC-V computing leader SiFive is again in the news, just a week after unveiling several significant new features updates for its latest SiFive X280 RISC-V processors. This time, SiFive is looking to boost its fortunes and market presence even more by opening a new R&D facility in the U.K. that will help the company to expand its proficiency in RISC-V architectures, products, and expertise around the world.

This is a bold, strategic move, giving SiFive a new and modern R&D facility that can immediately help the company to address the needs of RISC-V chip designers and product makers that are interested in using the latest RISC-V silicon in their business- and consumer-focused devices.

SiFive says it invested in its new R&D facility to address growing demand for its products and technologies today and in the future, while also working to find the talented staffers who will bring the next innovations to the company. While there’s much uncertainty in the world today — war in Ukraine, supply chain issues, a volatile stock market, inflation, looming fears of a recession and more, smart companies make bold moves, especially in times of duress.

Investing in this R&D facility now will help prepare SiFive for when these issues settle down in the future and will help the company be in a good place on the other side of the difficulties. These global difficulties may not have been in SiFive’s thinking when the R&D facility was being planned, funded and built, but it sure looks like creative timing today.

SiFive’s RISC-V chip designs are used for artificial intelligence, machine learning, automotive, data center, mobile, consumer markets, and more.

Closing Thoughts on SiFive’s Investments

RISC-V computing leader SiFive has made it clear that its mission in the market is to constantly bring new and innovative open standard RISC-V platforms and products to manufacturers and designers for use in their products for businesses and consumers.

SiFive continues to support those goals, having announced the receipt of its latest $175 million Series F funding round in March 2022, and the hiring of a new chief human resources officer, Nicole Singer, who is tasked with helping the company more than double its global staff across its international offices in the U.S., France, India, U.K., and Taiwan by 2024.

In a semiconductor space that is dominated by well-funded, entrenched incumbents that hold market leadership positions, SiFive will have to be ruthless in its execution and focus to succeed against the big guys.

As the known market leader in RISC-V, SiFive is well-positioned to capture the rapidly growing performance-driven markets and be seen as an open source choice against established incumbents.

It will be interesting to watch SiFive competing in their space and expanding their RISC-V research, innovations, and leadership as the company competes for market share and continuing success in the future. I would not bet against SiFive achieving these milestones.
