Millennials Making Two-Thirds of AI Accelerator Buying Decisions

Gen X next followed by Gen Z and Baby Boomers in Decision Maker Demographics for AI Chips

Futurum Intelligence, the research arm of The Futurum Group, recently released its AI chipset market analysis and study, providing a 5-year market forecast and segment sizing. A key finding in the report is that Millennials, born between 1980 and 1995, or roughly 29 to 44 years old, make more than 66.9% of all buying decisions for advanced AI chipsets for the cloud and data centers.

“It’s clear that Millennials are now the key purchasing decision-makers when it comes to semiconductor processors for AI, be it generative, predictive, prescriptive, or other forms of machine learning,” said Dr. Bob Sutor, Vice President and Practice Lead, Emerging Technologies at The Futurum Group.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the number of Millennials passed Baby Boomers in 2019 as the largest generation.1 As Baby Boomers retire or otherwise leave the workforce, their effect on AI chipset purchasing decisions is tiny, only 1.74%.

“Baby Boomers, those 60 to 78 years old, have minimal buying influence of AI chipsets,” continued Sutor. “This makes sense as younger generations rise through the corporate ranks and become the majority of senior managers and operational leaders.”

The next generation older than the Millennials, Gen X, still makes 22.4% of the buying decisions, but the degree to which they have ceded control to the Millennials is significant. Millennials determine nearly three times the purchasing choices as Gen X employees.

“At 89.3%, the sum of Millennial and Gen X combined AI chipset purchaser percentages tells the whole story,” said Sutor. “Semiconductor company marketers would be wise to focus almost exclusively on those generations. This means campaigns that appeal to the values important to them, such as sustainability and climate change.”

Purchasers in Gen Z , born after 1995, make up 8.96% of the demographics. This number will continue to rise and gain share from Gen X. We expect this to be reflected in the bi-annual updates to the Futurum Intelligence report. Subscribers will get the earliest access to demographic distributions and AI chip market statistics by processor type, geographies, vertical industries, use cases, purchasing roles, and organization sizes.
