Breaking the Protocol Wars: RISC-V as the TCP/IP of Silicon

RISC-V is currently in a position analogous to TCP/IP during the early Internet Protocol Wars. Before the open internet, digital communication was fragmented by proprietary protocols that forced companies into vertical stacks. TCP/IP shattered those silos. Similarly, RISC-V is dismantling the vendor lock-in of the AI era. Because the ISA is an open standard, software teams can build production-ready toolchains long before silicon returns from the fab. This synchronization allows hyperscalers to deploy custom AI accelerators at the speed of software innovation rather than the multi-year roadmaps of legacy hardware providers.

Strategic Implications: Why NVIDIA is Opening the Door

The devil’s advocate might say that NVIDIA, typically a champion of its own vertical stack and ARM CPUs, is inviting a Trojan Horse into its ecosystem. By supporting RISC-V, NVIDIA is providing a blueprint for hyperscalers to eventually transition away from proprietary host CPUs in favor of semi-custom RISC-V designs.

However, NVIDIA’s real moat lies in the CUDA software stack and NVLink interconnect fabric, rather than the host CPU ISA. By allowing SiFive to integrate NVLink Fusion, NVIDIA ensures that, regardless of the CPU a hyperscaler builds, it will still be centered around an NVIDIA-centric rack-scale architecture.

NVIDIA has transitioned from merely observing RISC-V to actively integrating it, shipping billions of RISC-V cores to replace its proprietary Falcon microcontrollers, which manage GPU operations. Building on this usage, NVIDIA has announced intentions to port its dominant CUDA AI acceleration stack to the RVA23 profile. This is a watershed moment analogous to Microsoft embracing Linux, signaling that RISC-V has graduated from a microcontroller alternative to a central orchestrator in the world’s most advanced accelerated computing environments.

Architectural Elegance: Hiding Latency Through Design

A critical factor in the SiFive RISC-V AI infrastructure is the handling of the memory wall. Traditional CPU designs fail in AI once weights exceed cache capacity. SiFive’s 2nd Generation Intelligence family addresses this through a decoupled vector architecture and latency-hiding queues. Unlike generic CPUs that stall when fetching from distant memory, SiFive’s loosely coupled pipeline ensures that memory stalls do not halt the entire CPU.

The inclusion of a Hardware Exponential Unit in SiFive’s latest IP reduces complex activation functions, such as Softmax, from 15 instructions to just one. When paired with NVLink Fusion’s high-bandwidth fabric, the aggregate system efficiency gains are astronomical. We are transitioning from a one-size-fits-all approach to a portfolio approach, where architects select and combine IP to suit specific stages of the model pipeline, particularly the prefill and decode phases of AI inference.

The “Software Gap” is Officially Dead

The strongest historical argument against RISC-V, of a lack of software maturity, is no longer valid. The ratification of the RVA23 profile ensures binary compatibility with major Linux distributions, such as Red Hat and Ubuntu. With NVIDIA now porting CUDA components to support RISC-V and integrating NVLink Fusion, the last major hurdle for enterprise adoption has cleared. In an industry where data movement efficiency is now a first-order design constraint, the ability to co-design hardware and software using an open standard like RISC-V can become a cornerstone of the AI data center.
