Pure Storage announces FlashBlade //EXA for the AI Factory

Analyst Take: Pure Storage released its latest AI technology, the FlashBlade //EXA, a pNFS architecture that reportedly can scale to meet what they coin the AI Factory requirements. Building on the FlashBlade technology with pNFS, Pure Storage has disaggregated the metadata and data nodes to enable a broad scale-out for high performance.

AI Factory – the target market for //EXA

Pure Storage, along with others, is using the phrase AI Factory to characterize organizations that are AI native, specializing in delivering technology for this next generation of AI. For instance, firms developing unique foundational models, specialized cloud providers, or HPC environments. This is somewhat contrasted to the typical enterprise organization that is building out and exploiting the trained or pre-inference technology. The differentiation of these markets is significant—in the count of GPUs (1000 – 10,000s), performance and data size (EB+). This market will need traditional scale-out parallel file systems (Lustre, GPFS, etc.) or a pNFS configuration to meet performance in the +1TB/ sec.

Scale-out file systems have traditionally been the domain of HPC markets. With the large-scale AI, we expect scale-out parallel file and pNFS / file systems to increasingly compete to deliver large, highly performant data infrastructure at a massive scale. In addition to scale and performance, the AI market will demand capabilities that optimize checkpointing performance, availability/reliability, and ease of use. The latter is not normally applicable to scale-out parallel file systems. It is this market that Pure Storage is focused on capturing.

Pure Storage and //EXA

Building on their hyperscaler experience (we believe particularly with Meta), Pure Storage FlashBlade //EXA takes on a disaggregated design, scaling metadata and data nodes independently. The metadata node uses NFSv4.1 over TCP (aka pNFS) and the data nodes are NFSv3 over RDMA. The metadata nodes will be purchased from Pure with CAPEX and OPEX options. The first release for the data nodes is with off-the-shelf hardware that is specified by Pure Storage. Pure Storage plans to release the data nodes with their Direct Flash Modules of 75TB and 150TB in 2H2025. Customers will license the software for the data nodes based on usable TB. Connectivity uses standard ethernet connectivity, including Nvidia’s NICs, right in the sweet spot of architectures for the AI Factory.

While Pure Storage alluded to performance, they held back from announcing any benchmark statistics. Historically they have claimed performance numbers but without the absolute comparison. In this market, we expect they will release comparatives and have been assured they are actively working on them. Their preliminary numbers (without Futurum analysis) are stated at 3.4TB/second per rack and 10+TB/ second read performance in a single namespace.

This is a positive announcement, one that will increase competition in the market. Read the full release from Pure Storage here.

The vision behind everything in Futurum’s Custom Research practice is this: research should show you what is happening, what comes next, and what to do about it. It should be personal to each audience, easy for people to grasp, and structured so LLMs can reason over it accurately. And it should be fast and turnkey; you want answers now, not another project to carry for quarters.

Whether you are defining business, channel, or go-to-market strategy; evaluating vendors or justifying ROI; or commissioning research to fill an emerging market need, we have your back, with a program that answers your questions with the objectivity and credibility to drive real decisions.

To do it, we bring unmatched data to bear: Futurum research, surveys, and market projections; validated market feeds; ETR’s 15 years of insight from 10,000 technology decision-makers; G2’s buyer and user data; and what our analysts hear every day. Add leading primary collection, from AI-moderated voice interviews to surveys and analyst-led interviews, all turnkey, and every project comes out credible, nuanced, and actionable.

And we don’t just drop the results in your lap. For internal work, we provide analyst-led sessions, interactive dashboards, and a range of formats. For market-facing work, Futurum delivers turnkey activation and amplification that actually gets seen, by people and by LLMs, through our media and share of voice. This is research that moves decisions and markets.

We will meet you wherever you are, from a fast-turn brief to a multi-year program, and shape the work to your goals, timeline, and budget. The right program for your moment.

If any of this is useful, I would love to talk.
