Lenovo’s New Workstations Are Geared Towards Helping STEM and STEAM Jobs Be More Efficient

The News: Lenovo recently announced its latest ThinkStation (desktops) and ThinkPad (notebooks) high-performance workstations, which include the ThinkStation P3 Tower, ThinkStation P3 Ultra, ThinkStation P3 Tiny, ThinkPad P16 Gen 2, ThinkPad P1 Gen 6, ThinkPad P16v I Gen 1 to name a few. Analyst Take: Lenovo’s latest line-up of ThinkStations and ThinkPads is an excellent move for the company, since the growth of STEM or STEAM job functions that typically use high-performance workstations are vast, with some segments (e.g., data scientists, statisticians, etc.) expected to have high double-digit growth over the next several years.

Lenovo’s ThinkStation Desktops

On the desktop front, Lenovo announced three new workstations: the ThinkStation P3 Tower, ThinkStation P3 Ultra, and the ThinkStation P3 Tiny. All three workstations support Intel’s 13th-generation core processors up to the i9 series.

The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tower has an expanded chassis and comes with the Intel 13th Generation Core i9-13900k with 24 cores. The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tower is the largest of the three and is 16.3 inches high, 7.1 inches wide, and 14.6 inches deep. The starting weight of the device is approximately 30 pounds. The system also includes up to one NVIDIA RTX A5500 or two NVIDIA RTX A2000, up to 128GB or four DDR5 DIMM slots and up to 5 drives (4x HDD + 1x M.2 SSD) or 6 drives (3x HDD + 3x M.2 SSD).

The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Ultra comes with Intel’s W680 Alder chipset, or the Core i9-13900k processor with 24 cores. The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Ultra has up to one NVIDIA RTX A5500 16 gigabyte graphics card, up to 128GB 4 DDR5 So-DIMM slots and up to 1x 2.5” HDD plus 2x M.2 SSDs. The device is capable of 24 terabytes of storage across 6 drives. The device comes in a mini-tower form factor with dimensions (WxDxH) of 3.43 x 8.78 x 7.95 inches along with weighing 3.96 lbs. The front of the system includes 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports and a 1x headphone/microphone combo jack (3.5mm). the device can support up to a 300-watt power supply.

The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny is much smaller and is designed to fit in smaller spaces. The dimensions of the device is (WxDxH) 7.0 x 7.2 x 1.5 inches with rubber feet. It comes with up to an Intel Core i9-13900 CPU, up to one NVIDIA T1000 8GB, up to 64GB DDR5-4800, 2x SO-DIMM and up to 2x 2TB M.2 PCie NVMe SSD with RAID 0/1 support. The Lenovo ThinkStationP3 also comes with a 300-watt power supply similar to the ThinkStation P3 Ultra.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad Notebooks

On the notebook front, Lenovo announced a flurry of models such as the ThinkPad P16 Gen 2, ThinkPad P1 Gen 6, ThinkPad P16v I Gen 1 and ThinkPad P14s I Gen 4.

The ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 is outfitted with Intel’s 13th-generation (Raptor Lake) Intel Core HX-Series processor (55W) in i5, i7, or i9 configurations along with professional graphics up to the NVIDIA RTX 5000 Ada Generation GPU for mobile workstations. From a memory perspective, the device has a maximum memory of 192GB of DDR5 memory and a minimum of 8GB. The length, height and weight of the device is 14.33 inches (L), 10.47 inches (W), and 1.19 inches (H) and weighs 6.5 lbs (with 6 cell (94WHr Battery).

The ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 is targeted at modern users and includes a sleeker design and comes with Intel’s 13th-generation (Raptor Lake) H Series (45W) in either Core i7 and i9 configurations. The device has a maximum of 96GB DDR5 (SoDIMM) memory. It can include discrete graphics of a NV RTX A1000, NV RTX 2/35/4/5000 Ada or GN GF RTX 4060/80/90. The length, weight, and height of the device is 14.15 inches (L), 9.99 inches (W) and 0.69 inches (H – w/non-touch) and weighs 4.11 lbs. (non-touch model).

The ThinkPad P16v I Gen 1 is also targeted with creators in mind and the device closes the gap in price and performance between an entry-level and high-end workstation. The device comes with Intel’s 13th-generation (Raptor Lake) H Series (45W) in the Core i5, i7 and i9 configurations. It has a maximum system memory of 96GB. The device supports an NVIDIA RTX A500, RTX A1000 or RTX 2000 Ada based on the selected configuration. The length, width and height of the device is 14.37 inches (L), 9.84 inches (W) and 0.97 inches (H) and weighs 4.85 lbs.

Wrapping it up, Lenovo’s announcements of these new devices is timely. Although the personal computer market has been impacted by negative market forces, key segments such as STEM and STEAM job functions are expected to have high growth over the course of the next few years as organizations want to expand their analytics capabilities and much more.
