BMC’s Helix NetOps for CSPs: A Unified Approach to Network Management

Analyst Take: BMC Software, established over four decades ago, has long been recognized as a stalwart in the IT management solutions arena, offering a broad spectrum of software tools for IT service management, operations, and automation. In the past 3-4 years, the company has undergone a significant transformation, pivoting toward AIOps to rejuvenate its service offerings and better cater to the evolving needs of its clients. This strategic shift toward leveraging AI and machine learning technologies aims to enhance operational efficiencies, predict IT issues before they occur, and automate resolutions, thereby driving deeper and more value-driven engagements with its clientele, which notably includes a substantial number of Fortune 500 companies. By embracing AIOps, BMC Software is not only fortifying its position in the competitive landscape but also ensuring that it remains at the forefront of innovation, helping organizations to navigate the complexities of modern IT environments with greater agility and insight.

Steven met with Joseph George, VP of product management, this past week at MWC in Barcelona, and George shared how BMC has expanded its Enterprise Service Management and AIOps capabilities over the past 3-4 years with a ground-up focus on development. This expansion harnesses the power of AI and ML to enhance observability, automate IT operations, identify patterns, and predict potential problems before they arise. Given the impending shift of communication service providers (CSPs) toward future network architectures, such as ORAN and VNF governed by cloud-native architectures, there is a growing demand for automation and orchestration across diverse physical, virtual, and containerized network operations. This transition further underscores the need to adopt AIOps into network operations. IDC has forecasted that AIOps will be the “new normal” in automating critical IT system and service management processes.

BMC’s new offering, BMC Helix NetOps for CSPs, is an extension to the BMC Helix IT Service Management (ITSM) solution, enhanced by generative AI. It provides out-of-the-box workflows built for CSPs’ Network Operations Centers (NOCs) and offers several advantages to CSPs. It facilitates automation, cutting down operational expenses linked to manual tasks, duplicative efforts, and overlapping field service calls. Processes from creation to closure for incident lifecycle events are automated, drawing from alarms set up by fault management systems. The solution eliminates process siloes by consolidating workflows, data, and operations across IT and NOC domains. NOC teams dispersed worldwide can receive real-time updates about incident progress, service level agreement performance, and total visibility of network alarms and field service actions used to address the incident. Service assurance is enhanced through rapid incident response, reducing mean-time-to-repair (MTTR) and mean-time-to-identify (MTTI) incidents while proactively predicting and preventing incidents. Lastly, the solution mitigates change management risks via thorough planning, implementation, and validation of changes.

The importance of BMC’s announcement within the evolving technology market, especially for IT decision-makers (ITDMs) in the telecom industry, can’t be overstated. The enhancement of BMC’s AIOps functions, bespoke for CSPs, complements the rising need for automation and intelligence in network operations.

The transition toward cloud-native architectures in the telecom sector calls for a shift toward more flexible and automated network management solutions. BMC’s Helix NetOps for CSPs caters to this demand by providing ready-made workflows intended for NOCs, thereby significantly lowering manual labor and operation expenses involved in incident management.

Moreover, the ability of the solution to unify workflows, data, and processes within IT and NOC domains is key to improving service assurance and reducing MTTR and MTTI incidents. Through this unified method, NOC teams have real-time insight into network alarms and field service actions, boosting incident management and overall service quality.

The inclusion of advanced anomaly detection and AI-driven predictive analytics enhances the system’s features, empowering CSP IT teams to identify and address potential issues before they affect service delivery. This proactive strategy not only minimizes the chance of service disruptions but also facilitates CSPs in streamlining their network operations and enhancing customer satisfaction.

The expansion of AIOps abilities by BMC through Helix NetOps for CSPs showcases notable progress in the telecom industry. It caters to the CSP’s evolving requirements by providing a comprehensive solution that combines automation, intelligence, and unified workflows to enhance service assurance and operational efficiency. ITDMs in the telecommunications sector may want to consider BMC’s offering as a strategic investment to stay ahead in the competitive landscape.

Looking Ahead

BMC’s announcement of the expansion of its Enterprise Service Management and AIOps capabilities with Helix NetOps for CSPs is a significant development in the telecommunications industry. The solution addresses the growing need for automation and intelligence in network operations, particularly in the context of cloud-native architectures. The solution’s out-of-the-box workflows designed for NOCs, unified approach to workflows, data, and processes, and incorporation of advanced anomaly detection and AI-driven predictive analytics make it a compelling option for CSPs looking to enhance service assurance and operational efficiency.
