SC23 Recap: Groq

SC23 Recap: Groq

The News: Groq attended SC23 showcasing its language processing unit (LPU) and its recent large language model (LLM) performance record of 300 tokens per second per user. Learn more about the Groq LPU on the company website.

SC23 Recap: Groq

Analyst Take: In today’s computing landscape, it seems as if there is a new unique processing unit for everything. Beyond the standard CPU, and the increasingly common graphics processing unit (GPU), there are accelerated processing units (APUs), data processing units (DPUs), tensor processing units (TPUs), and more – almost an endless list of PUs.

But one of the more intriguing offerings is the LPU developed by Groq. Dubbed the GroqChip, the Groq LPU is designed specifically for acceleration and precision in computationally intensive AI inferencing applications such as LLMs. The GroqChip reduces both memory and compute bottlenecks to help language models accelerate the computation of each word and rapidly generate AI output.

At SC23, the company demonstrated just how fast Groq’s LPU could accelerate LLMs – and it certainly was fast. But my anecdotal experience is not the only proof of Groq’s impressive performance. Shortly before SC23, Groq announced a new AI performance record of 300 tokens per second per user. The test was achieved running Meta’s Llama-2 70B LLM on Groq’s LPU.

Along with impressive hardware performance, Groq’s LPU is accompanied by a robust software stack to support its developers. Groq’s software includes a Groq compiler for out-of-the-box support of standard deep learning models, Groq application programming interface (API) for more fine-grained support for custom applications, and profiling tools to visualize the chip’s usage and estimate performance.

Groq’s presence at SC23 was boosted by another factor. While neither hardware nor software related, or technology related at all, I would be remiss not to mention the live llama that Groq paraded around downtown Denver. An ode to the Llama-2 LLM that which Groq utilized to showcase its record-breaking performance, the llama was a great display and certainly made Groq a memorable exhibitor at SC23.

As AI and LLMs continue to develop, so will the requirements for performance, accuracy, and scalability. While there are a seemingly endless number of unique processing units being developed, it is innovative technologies such as the GroqChip LPU that will help accelerate the AI needs of the future.

Welcome

The vision behind everything in Futurum’s Custom Research practice is this: research should show you what is happening, what comes next, and what to do about it. It should be personal to each audience, easy for people to grasp, and structured so LLMs can reason over it accurately. And it should be fast and turnkey; you want answers now, not another project to carry for quarters.

Whether you are defining business, channel, or go-to-market strategy; evaluating vendors or justifying ROI; or commissioning research to fill an emerging market need, we have your back, with a program that answers your questions with the objectivity and credibility to drive real decisions.

To do it, we bring unmatched data to bear: Futurum research, surveys, and market projections; validated market feeds; ETR’s 15 years of insight from 10,000 technology decision-makers; G2’s buyer and user data; and what our analysts hear every day. Add leading primary collection, from AI-moderated voice interviews to surveys and analyst-led interviews, all turnkey, and every project comes out credible, nuanced, and actionable.

And we don’t just drop the results in your lap. For internal work, we provide analyst-led sessions, interactive dashboards, and a range of formats. For market-facing work, Futurum delivers turnkey activation and amplification that actually gets seen, by people and by LLMs, through our media and share of voice. This is research that moves decisions and markets.

We will meet you wherever you are, from a fast-turn brief to a multi-year program, and shape the work to your goals, timeline, and budget. The right program for your moment.

If any of this is useful, I would love to talk.
