The News: Silicon Labs recently announced at CES 2023 that Yeelight, a smart lighting company, has chosen Silicon Labs MG24 2.4Ghz wireless system on chip (SoC) for its Yeelight Pro, its first Matter 1.0 battery-powered occupancy sensor. Read the Silicon Labs release for more information.

Analyst Take: Yeelight selecting Silicon Labs MG24 SoC for its Yeelight Pro P20 occupancy sensor, its first Matter 1.0 battery-powered occupancy sensor is, to my way of thinking, an excellent choice.

The smart connected device market continues to gain traction in the smart home and other markets (e.g., SOHO, etc.) and many vendors are feverishly trying to implement devices that are enabled with the latest Matter 1.0 standard, which makes the devices capable of unifying myriad protocols that simplify connectivity and management of connected devices from myriad vendors.

Overall, the market for occupancy sensors is on the rise. In the commercial market, for instance, sensors are being used for safety, security, and energy savings initiatives. An easy example of this tech in action is room lights that sense when the room is occupied, turning lights on automatically upon entry, and then turning off lights when the room is vacated. From a smart home standpoint, sensor lights are also used to detect home intruders or other activity around the home that homeowners want to monitor for safety reasons. These are just a few excellent use cases for the Yeelabs’ Yeelight Pro device.

I view Yeelabs’ selection of the Silicon Labs’ MG24 2.4Ghz wireless system on chip as likely based on a variety of reasons, including its ultra-low power which supports multiple protocols including Matter, Zigbee, Open Thread, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and Bluetooth Mesh just to name a few. Based on the low-power of the Silicon Labs MG24, the Yeelabs P20 occupancy sensor can be used under battery mode for three years, along with supporting line-power.

Wrapping it up, Yeelabs’ selection of the Silicon Labs MG24 2.4Ghz wireless SoC is a solid move. It makes the Yeelabs P20 more attractive to consumers looking for devices that seamlessly interoperate with other devices from a variety of vendors on the Matter standard 1.0. In addition, the increasing interest, both from the commercial and consumer markets focused on energy efficiency, security, and safety, make a lot of sense.
