Hammerspace and Vcinity Join Forces

Analyst Take: Hammerspace and Vcinity recently announced a joint collaboration that leverages Vcinity’s high-speed data movement technology alongside Hammerspace’s data orchestration platform. According to the joint press release, “Hammerspace performed its data-in-place assimilation, which is normally done locally, over a wide area network (simulated) by leveraging Vcinity. This enables customers and service providers to easily orchestrate third-party file data from remote locations to centralized resources such as GPU farms.”

Hammerspace provides a software-defined solution to unify and orchestrate data across separate storage solutions to provide a global file system with a single namespace. Vcinity provides high-speed data movement over large distances. By combining the two solutions, Hammerspace can extend its capabilities over a wide area network (WAN) with rapid data movement from Vcinity. The joint solution is being targeted at several use cases including:

  • AI/machine learning (ML)
  • Distributed data centers
  • Remote workforces
  • Edge computing

The joint solution, which was on display at SC23, greatly enhances the capabilities of Hammerspace. By utilizing Vcinity data movement, the Hammerspace environment can be opened to facilitate data over large geographic distances while maintaining data access as if it were local. The four use cases identified are all areas that could greatly benefit from this technology, as they involve large quantities of unstructured data that might be spread globally. Ultimately, the solution expands Hammerspace’s reach and provides a more powerful and more efficient solution to its customers.
