Azure Stack HCI is a hyperconverged solution comprised of Azure Stack HCI OS, purchased as a subscription through a Microsoft Azure account, and validated partners’ hardware. Azure Stack HCI OS includes Microsoft’s Hyper-V hypervisor, Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) and software-defined networking (SDN) managed by Windows Admin Center.

Azure Stack HCI was initially called Windows Server Software Defined (WSSD). The current Azure Stack HCI is version 22H2 and uses Windows Server 2022. It hosts virtualized Windows and Linux workloads and their storage in a hybrid environment that combines on-premises infrastructure with Azure cloud services.

Azure Stack HCI is sold by server vendors in partnership with Microsoft, including Cisco, DataOn, Dell EMC, Fujitsu, HPE, Hitachi, Lenovo, Supermicro and others.
