Lenovo ThinkAgile VX Series – Product Review

The Lenovo ThinkAgile VX Series of hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) appliances combine VMware’s vSAN software with vSphere and vCenter running on clustered Lenovo ThinkSystem servers.

The Lenovo ThinkAgile VX Series leverages the on-going advancements of VMware’s vSAN technology. These include vSAN Express Storage Architecture (ESA) that takes advantage of modern flash storage technologies and vSAN Max for independent scaling of storage and compute resources.

vSAN offers mirroring (RAID 10) and single- and dual-parity (RAID 5/6) between nodes as well as built-in encryption that doesn’t require self-encrypting drives. It also has inline deduplication and compression, providing up to a 7x space reduction, according to VMware. However, these data reduction features are only available on all-flash nodes and must be set on or off for the entire system, not by the volume or VM, as other products allow. The VX Series has most of the same software characteristics as VMware’s vSAN product (for more information see The Futurum Group Research on VMware vSAN).
