Huawei OceanStor 100D – Product Analysis

Huawei OceanStor 100D is a distributed storage solution offering support for block, file, and object access. Beginning as a block only storage solution with limited functionality, OceanStor 100D has evolved into a more complete system with the 8.0 release in 2019. In 2020, Huawei renamed the FusionStorage to OceanStor 100D. OceanStor 100D has now matured into a highly scalable storage solution that offers exabyte level capacity and can support a virtually unlimited number of objects, while also providing block and file access support.

OceanStor 100D is available as software, as well as a system based on ARM64 processors running on Huawei Servers. The OceanStor 100D system utilizes both HDDs and SSDs that are compatible with NVMe, SAS, and SATA. OceanStor 100D access is enabled over Ethernet and InfiniBand.

OceanStor 100D uses a ring architecture based off of the MIT chord peer-to-peer distribution protocol. S3 and Swift object storage APIs are supported, along with iSCSI, SCSI, and OpenStack Cinder for block access. NFS, CIFS, and SMB can be used for file access through the use of a gateway such as Panzura, Veritas Access, or SoftNAS.

OceanStor 100D offers a long list of features including object level deduplication and compression, data encryption, and asynchronous replication. It also features read caching, erasure coding, WORM based immutability, and object versioning, among other features.

With the 8.0 update, OceanStor 100D looks to be a competitive offering in the object storage marketplace. Key competitors include Scality RING, IBM Cloud Object Storage, Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage, Cloudian HyperStore, DDN WOS, and HGST ActiveScale.
