Hitachi Content Platform – Product Review

The Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) is an object storage system for fixed content storage and for long-term archiving under policy controls. The controller of the HCP uses custom software from Hitachi and standard Hitachi block storage systems. The Hitachi Content Platform is targeted at content storage for unstructured data across multiple industries and market segments and has the capability to meet multiple regulatory requirements around
records retention.

The HCP is a scaling system based on clustering of nodes with attached storage. The minimum is one node with the ability to scale up to 80 nodes in the cluster. Data is distributed among the nodes in the cluster for load balancing. Object data is stored as files in the HCP-FS clustered file system with metadata associated with the object also stored as a file. The metadata is information added by an application or system information added by HCP. Files or objects stored in the HCP are accessed over an Ethernet network with remote file system protocols or object APIs such as Amazon S3.

There are several models of HCP, the Model S31 and Model S11 have self-contained disk storage and the Model G11 uses externally attached Hitachi storage – all flash or disk versions. An HCP virtual appliance runs on KVM or VMware ESXi hosts – integrated with KVM or VMware High Availability.

Hitachi has also released a software defined solution based on HCP called HCP for Cloud Scale. HCP for Cloud Scale provides a scalable, container based object storage solution that can be deployed either on premises or in a public cloud.

Active cloud tiering allows data to be moved to and from public clouds under policy controls established in HCP.
