Dell’s PowerProtect DD Series Appliances are used for backup, compliance and archiving/long-term retention use cases. PowerProtect DD is the next generation of the Data Domain portfolio of systems acquired by EMC in 2009; they were re-branded in September 2019 to fit in with Dell’s overarching data protection portfolio branding. As Data Domain brand, PowerProtect DD established the market for backup-to-disk systems. The result is a range of models and broad-spread deployments, including within remote offices, mid-sized organizations and large enterprises; on-premises and in the cloud.
PowerProtect DD’s key functionality is the use of software and general-purpose CPUs to deduplicate data inline during transfer to a disk storage target that is connected to the PowerProtect DD controller. Dell publishes deduplication rates up to 65x; results depend greatly on the data being deduplicated.
PowerProtect DD Series systems are offered as appliances, paired systems for global deduplication and as archiving systems in conjunction with Dell’s Cloud Tier feature. PowerProtect DD provides network-attached storage (NAS) access, and midrange and high-end models can be deployed in Virtual Tape Library (VTL) mode, which enables the PowerProtect DD device to function like a tape system.
