Hammerspace Adds High-Performance Erasure Coding

The News: Hammerspace unveiled a new high-performance erasure coding capability for its Global Data Environment. The feature adds resiliency and efficiency to Hammerspace’s software, which can create a Global File System on top of heterogeneous storage solutions. More details about Hammerspace’s new erasure coding functionality can be found on the company’s website.

Analyst Take: Hammerspace announced a new high-performance erasure coding capability to its Global Data Environment software. The announcement comes as the latest in a string of announcements from Hammerspace about additional functionality the company is layering onto its software, including support for tape storage and a parallel file system capability called HyperScale NAS.

The origin of this new erasure coding capability appears to stem from Hammerspace’s acquisition of a French startup company called RozoFS that was announced last year. RozoFS had been developing a NAS solution that utilizes its patented Mojette Transform erasure codes, which are now the basis of Hammerspace’s erasure coding.

Hammerspace’s new high-performance erasure coding capability implements the Mojette Transform erasure code to provide data reliability with low computational requirements. The Mojette Transform technique uses discrete geometry along with relatively simple mathematical operations, requiring lower computational complexity than other approaches. The result is an efficient erasure coding capability that is well-suited for a large, distributed storage system such as Hammerspace. Hammerspace claims that its erasure codes are 2x faster than traditional erasure coding schemes.

Hammerspace’s software allows organizations to orchestrate their data and create a global file system on top of their existing heterogenous storage solutions. Its recent updates, including the addition of erasure coding, provides additional data services and operational flexibility for organizations looking to leverage Hammerspace’s software. The new erasure coding functionality will provide reliability and resiliency of Hammerspace’s Global Data Environment, while doing so in an efficient and scalable manner.
