Hybrid Cloud Storage for the Enterprise – Study Overview

As we advance further into the era of cloud computing, enterprise end users increasingly understand that there will always be an on-premises information technology (IT) component. This leads them to the conclusion that the Hybrid Cloud is the only long-term end state.

To understand the changes, last year we used survey data and one-on-one interviews with enterprise IT administrators to gain insights into their perceptions and experiences with hybrid cloud as an enterprise architecture. We found that, for a growing majority, Hybrid Cloud computing was their long-term future. We explored their interpretations of IT agility (a term often used to describe their objectives), how they interpret a “cloud first” directive from upper-level management, what barriers they had to overcome, and what use cases where leading the technology changes. It is from this foundation in 2018 we dove into the adoption of the use cases and data storage.

This report then “drills-down” on the storage environments within hybrid cloud architectures and asked respondents to focus on storage in the context of eight hybrid cloud use cases. We asked storage-related questions for each of their top two selections. We also asked Hybrid Cloud storage questions of a general nature. In total, we wanted to better understand trend lines that included:

  • Cloud storage spending patterns now and over the next 2 years
  • Which use cases dominate versus those that are emerging
  • Perceptions of cost for on-premises versus cloud storage
  • Drivers of storage growth in the cloud
  • Management responsibilities and decision making in the cloud era
  • Perceptions of barriers and ways users overcome them
  • Preferred cloud services providers
  • Technology used for use case such as connectivity, protocols, data protection
  • Overall outlook among users of Hybrid Cloud storage environments
