The IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) is a block-storage virtualization appliance, consisting of IBM Spectrum Virtualize software and server hardware. The system supports up to four pairs of controllers with a minimum of two controllers required for a cluster.
The IBM SVC includes data reduction of primary data to increase effective capacity. Data is compressed as it is received in the SVC controllers and stored in compressed form on the external systems. The IBM Virtual Storage Controller (VSC) is an SVC that is packaged as a solution with IBM Spectrum Control (Tivoli Storage Productivity Center) and Spectrum Protect Snapshot (FlashCopy Manager). The software for the SVC and VSC is named IBM Spectrum Virtualize.
