How Lamini Optimized LLM Finetuning System on AMD GPUs

The News: Lamini CTO Greg Diamos popped open the hood and gave a detailed look at the engine behind its AMD graphics processing unit (GPU)-driven LLM Superstation in a blog post. You can read the blog on the Lamini website.

How Lamini Optimized LLM Finetuning System on AMD GPUs

Analyst Take: Lamini raised eyebrows last month when the large language model (LLM) finetuning specialist revealed it built its LLM Superstation on AMD Instinct MI210 and MI250 accelerators rather than wait for NVIDIA H100s. The H100 GPUs have a 52-week lead time. LLM Superstation is available now, both in the cloud and on-premises.

At the time of announcement, Diamos said AMD’s ROCm GPU programming software has achieved parity with NVIDIA CUDA for LLMs. In his follow-up blog, Diamos disclosed how Lamini built its optimized finetuning system on AMD Instinct GPUs, and the technical hurdles it had to overcome.

Lamini started by running a single MI100 system last December before AMD donated two MI210 servers. The pre-seed startup set them up in a janitor’s closet with ventilation and sound insulation.

It eventually grew into a data center at CoreSite, with a typical configuration of 4 x MI250 GPU servers. That provided 512 GB of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which can fit a ~200 billion parameter LLM in bfloat16. Lamini used shared NFS servers, about 400 TB, and a high-performance network between GPU servers. Upcoming AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs with 192 GB of HBM will allow further scaling.

Now Lamini is in phase two of its finetuning, which involves integrating 128 AMD MI200 GPUs into the platform. This phase requires using layers of specialized software inside ROCm as well as building new layers. These layers include the GPU, an AMDgpu Linux driver, and optimized libraries. The Lamini SDK sits on top of the layers, adding LLM use cases such as chat, classification, and autocomplete. The SDKs use Python and TypeScript application programming interface (API) clients for loading, querying, and finetuning LLMs.

Diamos said Lamini added new optimizations that accelerate LLMs and take advantage of unique capabilities of AMD’s MI platform. These optimizations enable hosting 200 billion parameter models on a single server and 10,000 finetuned language models on one server, handling 12,800 simultaneous requests to a single server and processing over 3.5 million queries per day on one node.

The way Diamos sees it, ROCm has “enormous potential” to go beyond CUDA for LLM finetuning, and Lamini and ROCm can efficiently finetune the largest LLMs, such as Meta AI’s Llama 2. If he is correct, the combination can significantly change the LLM training market.

As The Futurum Group colleague Mark Beccue wrote in September: “Despite some limitations, the AMD-Lamini Superstation is a viable option for enterprises to consider for deploying LLMs. Savvy enterprises that cannot wait a calendar year to run AI workloads will be test-driving the system.” It will not be easy for AMD or any other competitor to dent NVIDIA’s dominance in the GPU market, but AMD can at least give data scientists and IT teams a viable option.

The vision behind everything in Futurum’s Custom Research practice is this: research should show you what is happening, what comes next, and what to do about it. It should be personal to each audience, easy for people to grasp, and structured so LLMs can reason over it accurately. And it should be fast and turnkey; you want answers now, not another project to carry for quarters.

Whether you are defining business, channel, or go-to-market strategy; evaluating vendors or justifying ROI; or commissioning research to fill an emerging market need, we have your back, with a program that answers your questions with the objectivity and credibility to drive real decisions.

To do it, we bring unmatched data to bear: Futurum research, surveys, and market projections; validated market feeds; ETR’s 15 years of insight from 10,000 technology decision-makers; G2’s buyer and user data; and what our analysts hear every day. Add leading primary collection, from AI-moderated voice interviews to surveys and analyst-led interviews, all turnkey, and every project comes out credible, nuanced, and actionable.

And we don’t just drop the results in your lap. For internal work, we provide analyst-led sessions, interactive dashboards, and a range of formats. For market-facing work, Futurum delivers turnkey activation and amplification that actually gets seen, by people and by LLMs, through our media and share of voice. This is research that moves decisions and markets.

We will meet you wherever you are, from a fast-turn brief to a multi-year program, and shape the work to your goals, timeline, and budget. The right program for your moment.

If any of this is useful, I would love to talk.
