The News: Intel recently unveiled its new 14th-generation Intel Meteor Lake CPUs that are built on 4-nanometer processes versus its 13th Generation Raptor Lake chips that are built on the 7-nanometer process. Read Intel’s Press Release for more information.

Intel Meteor Lake: Placing Bets on On-Device AI

Analyst Take: Intel walked out its new 14th Generation CPU, which is the company’s first chip built on the 4-nanometer process making it more power-efficient than its 13th Generation Raptor Lake chips that are 7-nanometer process. The new chip promises to deliver much richer experiences as the world shifts towards on-device AI or at least sharing the load with the cloud (or hybrid AI).

Essentially, gravity is here and pulling the world towards AI everywhere. Today, we continue to observe most software and hardware companies trying to figure out ways of weaving AI into their system-on-chips (SoCs), devices (e.g., PCs, smartphones, tablets, XR headsets, surveillance cameras, etc.), application software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Microsoft Power BI, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) and infrastructure software (e.g., security, storage management, etc.) Thus, organizations want productivity improvements whether they are on the PC or in the data center. Similarly, consumers want their devices to just work with a pain-free setup, and self-healing when things go awry while also optimizing their lives.

Thus, Intel is placing its bet that on-device AI will also play a key role in the future as more users want to take advantage of advanced functionality via AI, making the on-device experience that much richer for its users whether they know it or not. In essence, on font-facing applications such as collaboration applications, some things will continue to be more obvious such as AI tweaking back-end processes on the fly, making system performance much better as it learns the user’s behavior.

Intel Meteor Lake 14th Generation CPU

As mentioned previously, the Intel Meteor Lake 14th Generation CPU will be built on a 4-nanometer process, which Intel calls Intel 4, that should make them more power-efficient than its 13th Generation Raptor Lake chips that are on a 7-nanometer process. As a side note, Apple’s newest M2 chip is built on the 5-nanometer process, so I’m anxious to see the comparisons at the end of the year when they are officially launched.

At the recent Computex event, Intel shared some of its AI features that included next-gen power management, integrated graphics, and the new integrated AI engine. The Intel Meteor Lake CPU also has a VPU (Vision Processing Unit) embedded in the chip which is a dedicated AI engine that consumes minimal power while performing myriad AI tasks such as making the video conferencing experience that much richer by suppressing unwanted noises (e.g., fire truck, dogs barking, etc.), real-time video editing, and blurred background replacement just to name a few. Intel also mentioned that the Meteor Lake chip will also include a new integrated Intel Arc Graphics that signals a performance difference in graphics performance.

Wrapping it up, Intel recently unveiled its 14th-generation Intel Meteor Lake CPUs that are designed to make the on-device AI experience that much richer for users with the chip’s new next-generation power management, integrated graphics, and new integrated (low-power) AI engine.
