Ericsson Smartly Targets Mobile Network Efficiency and Resilience with Service Continuity AI App Suite

The News: The Service Continuity AI app suite is the latest addition to Ericsson’s network Support Services portfolio. This suite has been developed in collaboration with CSPs for predictive and preemptive support. Ericsson Smartly Targets Mobile Network Efficiency and Resilience with Service Continuity AI App Suite

Analyst Take: Ericsson bolstered its Support Services portfolio with the launch of Service Continuity AI app suite, an offering of more than 200 AI applications designed to aid communications service providers (CSPs) to improve the efficiency and resilience of their mobile networks. The AI app suite is split into five functional categories: insights; performance; assurance; self-healing; and energy efficiency.

Each AI app is an intelligent algorithm developed jointly with CSPs to preempt potential network issues. Combined with Ericsson’s telecom expertise, the pre-trained algorithms also work within specific parameters to elevate performance in line with the goals of the service provider. An AI app is operational 24/7, ensuring full oversight of the network, otherwise challenging without automation.

To demonstrate how AI-enabled automation can improve mobile network efficiency and boost resiliency, Ericsson cites examples of how AI apps are delivering use cases such as common public radio interface (CPRI) & small form-factor pluggable (SFP) failure prevention, self-healing, and energy efficiency per site benefits. CPRI/SFP failure prevention, for instance, can enable CSPs to monitor all relevant links path loss trends and recommend a site visit only after policy-defined thresholds are passed. As a result, the preemptive solution can cut costs per site visit by an estimated 30 percent according to Ericsson calculations and reduce downtime which can boost user experience as well as network stability and performance.

Overall, I see the Ericsson Service Continuity AI app suite capabilities as providing the intelligence essential to the automation of operations and business processes across mobile networks, including emerging 5G standalone SA implementations. This includes strengthening its overall mobile network portfolio to boost differentiation against top-tier mobile network rivals Nokia, Samsung, Huawei, and ZTE as well as Open RAN advocates such as NEC, Rakuten Symphony, Fujitsu, and Mavenir.

I see the Ericsson Service Continuity AI app suite capabilities as providing the intelligence essential to the automation of operations and business processes across mobile networks, including 5G SA environments. The build-out of 5G-IoT networks significantly expands virtualization and workload distribution demands which taxes the IT resources of most operators including workforce skills and scaling new services across multi-cloud environments. Through AI/ML, I anticipate that mobile network operators can become more efficient at scaling and administering their network and services while navigating industry-wide skills shortages as well as looming global economic headwinds.
