What is next in new technology, approaches, and the longer-term strategy for these enterprise IT operations group is a different question. That can be answered with a survey backed by interviews for the future direction.

The approaches for the different areas show that each is considered individually; there is no single answer to store and manage information.

Primary Storage for Existing Applications

Existing applications or workloads have need for more capacity as a normal situation with capacity demand increasing as normal activity continues. The common direction is to add more capacity as needed until either the current storage in use cannot practically increase capacity without affecting performance or when a change is dictated by an increase in support cost (usually when the end of the current support period is reached). In some cases, the increase in support cost may be coincident with the amortization schedule for the storage system, defining the expected replacement by IT.
