StorONE S1 – Product Brief

StorONE S1 Enterprise Storage Platform is a scale-up software-defined storage solution that can be configured with one or two storage controllers running on industry-standard server hardware. These controllers are connected to drives in external chassis via SAS or PCIe, supporting block, file and object storage on the same system, with the same software stack, and all included in the same software license.

S1 can be deployed bare-metal, or as a VM, on Intel x86 64-bit CPUs, Optane SSDs, SAS or NVMe SSDs or HDDs in all-flash and hybrid configurations. S1 can also be deployed in the cloud.
S1 uses fewer CPU resources to do all of the typical tasks that a storage system has to perform. This efficiency advantage comes from a few primary factors. StorONE developed their storage technology stack from the ground up, instead of using an existing piece of technology, a process that has taken six years.

Part of this design was to parallelize the individual processes in the storage stack that are typically run in a serial fashion in a storage controller, things like metadata management, storage virtualization, logical and physical block addressing, data resiliency, replication, etc. These tasks get fed into different CPU cores simultaneously, which StorONE says greatly reduces latency, the key to efficiency and performance.

According to the company, S1 can deliver 85% of the maximum performance of each drive (HDD or solid state), allowing the system to produce aggregate storage performance in the hundreds of thousands or millions of IOPS with relatively few drives. Based on recent Evaluator Group tests StoreONE’s AFAn storage system was able to achieve over 1 million I/Os per second for transactional read workloads while maintaining sub milli-second response times, on a single controller system with eight SSDs.
