Dell EMC PowerOne – Product Brief

Note: Evaluator Group research of Converged Infrastructure has been discontinued. The following Product Brief has been archived and is no longer being maintained for updates as of January 2023.

Dell EMC’s PowerOne is a Converged Infrastructure (CI) solution consisting of Dell EMC MX7000 blade chassis, Dell networking components and Dell EMC PowerMax or Unity XT storage systems, with Dell EMC PowerProtect software, sold as an integrated, rack-level solution. PowerOne is designed to provide a complete infrastructure stack for specific use cases, especially those supporting the most critical, tier-1 applications such as database, cloud computing, server virtualization, etc.

Unlike Dell EMC’s VxBlock, which includes Cisco switches and servers, PowerOne only uses Dell EMC hardware. And unlike Dell EMC’s Ready Stack, PowerOne is only available with the components listed above, assembled, pre-configured and installed by Dell EMC and its partners. The most significant difference between PowerOne and these other Dell EMC CI solutions is the PowerOne Controller.

PowerOne Controller is a separate management and orchestration platform that runs on separate rack-mounted servers. This software has a microservices architecture that runs in Kubernetes containers. It uses Ansible to manage API calls that automate the deployment, upgrade and expansion of the PowerOne solution.

Launch Assist provides acquisition, configuration and system initialization, actually shipping the system racked and tested at the factory. PowerOne can provide a workload-ready VMware cluster in a few clicks, what Dell EMC calls a “near zero-touch experience”.
