Dell Avamar – Product Review

Avamar is one of Dell’s data protection software offerings, with PowerProtect Data Manager and NetWorker being other solutions in the vendor’s portfolio (see The Futurum Group’s separate Product Review documents on these products). Dell Avamar is available as a part of Dell’s Data Protection Suite.

Avamar supports a range of source data, both on-premises and in the cloud. The Avamar solution is offered in three forms: as software, a virtual appliance, and as a physical appliance with Dell hardware via the Integrated Data Protection Appliance (IDPA) family (which The Futurum Group also covers in a separate Product Review). Both the software and virtual edition integrate with Dell PowerProtect DD systems (formerly Data Domain). (Note: Existing customers can still use the original scalable Avamar Data Store hardware solution, however Dell is focusing customers on the Avamar software and virtual edition with PowerProtect DD going forward.)

Avamar backs up both local and remote physical and virtual systems including servers, network-attached storage (NAS) systems, endpoints, and enterprise applications. It uses clientside agents, or the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) with Avamar Accelerators in the case of NAS systems, to control data backup. Avamar protects only unique blocks at the source to greatly reduce the amount of data that is transferred and stored. All data is encrypted in flight for security.

Administration is through a graphical user interface (GUI) that is accessed either through the web or from an application loaded on a server. Avamar also delivers tight VMware integration, including the ability to perform backup and recovery operations directly from VMware interfaces – vSphere, Cloud Director and vRealize Automation.
