IBM Storage Insights – Product Brief

IBM Storage Insights is a storage monitoring and predictive analytics solution that is simple to use and does not require the advanced training and complexity of administration of the majority of SRM software offerings. Typically, use of SRM requires dedicated storage administrator resources and allocated time to constantly manage and interpret the data from the storage environment.

IBM has addressed the complexity, time, and cost problems with a solution called IBM Storage Insights. IBM Storage Insights has taken a unique web-based Software as a Service approach and added data collection with IBM Research-developed analytics to produce a very simple to use tool that is powerful in delivering functionality for storage resource management. Storage resource management applications typically require installation (including databases), configuration, and ongoing updates. The Software as a Service implementation of Storage Insights relieves all those burdens.

The simplicity is evident in that no training is required and an IT generalist or manager can easily accomplish the tasks that previously required advanced experience with storage. The administrative overhead tasks are limited to downloading the data collector tool on a server and selecting the storage systems to be monitored. Applications, servers, departments, and individual storage pools can be identified for monitoring storage usage. Tracking of performance for storage includes the ability to drill down to more detail levels to get a better understanding and isolate problem areas. The views over extended time periods allow anomalies to be discovered and researched.
