The Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform E series models of midrange storage systems continues the virtualized storage architecture delivered with the high-end VSP and have replaced the earlier F and G midrange models. The VSP E1090 was released in February 2022 with the all flash model and the E1090H hybrid systems additionally supporting HDDs. The VSP E990 model was introduced in April 2020 with additional models in December 2020 and are all NVMe storage systems. The embedded Storage Virtualized Operating System RF (SVOS RF) is the singular code stream for Hitachi block storage, used across the entire VSP family. Advances in the technology using standard Intel components and SVOS have increased performance, expanded usability with active-active stretched clusters, extended storage virtualization with Virtual Storage Machines (VSMs), and added non-disruptive scale out capabilities to extend the life of the system. The seamless continuation of the Hitachi VSP series line will allow customers to have a common set of capabilities and management across the products. The E-series models support block access only.
This document provides an overview and analysis of the Hitachi VSP midrange systems originally announced in April 2015 and updated in October 2016, May 2018, April 2020, and February 2022. Competitive storage system alternatives for the E-series include the Dell EMC PowerStore, PureStorage FlashArray, NetApp AFF and IBM FlashSystem.
