Dell EMC PowerMax – Product Analysis

The Dell EMC PowerMax system is an evolution of the VMAX All Flash with support for NVMe over Fabric connection and use of NVMe protocol devices in Device Array Enclosures connected with PCIe. NVMe flash SSDs and Storage Class Memory (SCM) Optane are the devices supported. PowerMax is a high-end enterprise storage system with the features and capabilities of the VMAX family. Recent generations of the evolution from Symmetrix to PowerMax are:

• 2003 – DMX
• 2009 – VMAX
• 2014 – VMAX³
• 2016 – VMAX All Flash
• 2018 – PowerMax

PowerMax continues the evolution of the Dynamic Virtual Matrix architecture with PowerMax OS as the embedded operating environment. As a high-end enterprise class storage array, the PowerMax has extensive reliability and availability features that complement broad set of advanced software features. PowerMax supports IBM mainframe environments, open systems, and IBM System i. File access support is available using the implementation of a hypervisor as part of the embedded operating system and VNX Data Mover and Control Station software as Data Services executing in the hypervisor virtual machines and called eNAS.

PowerMax has two models that differ in hardware configurations including processor engines, DRAM cache memory, connectivity, and capacity: the 2500 and 8500. Competitors for the different PowerMax models include IBM’s DS8900 and FlashSystem systems, Hitachi’s VSP 5000, NetApp AFF A800, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Primera storage systems.
