Cohesity SmartFiles – Product Brief

Cohesity SmartFiles is a Scale Out NAS system using the SpanFS software developed by Cohesity. SpanFS is the filesystem software also used in DataPlatform, which is a distributed, highly scalable storage system designed to function as a consolidation point for a variety of secondary data storage types and as an integrated backup solution. It has a clustered, scale-out architecture with each node providing storage capacity, processing power, and networking connectivity to the system.

As a scale out NAS system, file protocols of NFS and CIFS/SMB are supported to access file shares on the Cohesity system. Object storage is also supported with the S3 protocol by storing objects as files within a SmartFiles-based system. Scale out provides increasing performance and capacity for the system as nodes are added. SmartFiles does not have defined limits as to scalability. Cohesity has reported testing configurations up to 256 nodes. A node is a server with captive storage and each node is a peer in the scale out configuration – no master node is required.

Cohesity has an extensive set of advanced features for SmartFiles. In addition to having a global namespace across the nodes, searching may be done across both data and metadata across the global environment.
