Rubrik’s Cloud Data Management solution gained initial market traction as a scale-out data protection solution; Evaluator Group covers the product from this perspective in a separate product brief. This document covers the product from the standpoint of multi-cloud data management – a growing focus and use case of Rubrik Cloud Data Management.
The foundation of Rubrik Cloud Data Management is a scale-out distributed file system named Atlas. Atlas creates a global namespace for the storage resources under protection, and it handles data placement and protection. On top of Atlas sits a software layer called Cerebro, a set of functions that operate together for data lifecycle management functions including archiving and long-term retention. The data lifecycle management capabilities leverage the “Distributed Metadata System,” a searchable global metadata index, created by Cerebro.
Additional data management capabilities are available through Rubrik’s add-on Polaris offering, which is based on its acquisition of Datos IO. Polaris is a software-as-a-service (SaaS)-delivered platform for creating a global content catalog across multi-cloud environments, and for data management capabilities including search and workflow orchestration. Features are exposed through APIs for Rubrik and third-party application developers to use. Rubrik currently offers the following Polaris SaaS applications:
