IBM Spectrum Protect – Product Brief

IBM Spectrum Protect has been in the market for decades (it is still referred to by its initial branding, Tivoli Storage Manager or “TSM,” by many customers). It provides enterprise-class data protection for physical, cloud and, via IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments, virtual environments. IBM Spectrum Protect Plus adds support for additional workloads including Microsoft Exchange and SQL and Oracle. Additionally, VMware data can be backed up directly from IBM Spectrum Protect Plus to IBM Spectrum Protect. For additional detail on IBM Spectrum Protect Plus, see Evaluator Group’s separate Product Brief.

Specifically, Spectrum Protect facilitates fast and flexible restores of individual items, complete systems, and entire data centers from primary and remote recovery sites. It can back data up to a variety of storage infrastructure types including flash, spinning disk, tape, on-premises object stores and public clouds.

Spectrum Protect supports source data from block storage systems, file servers, network-attached storage (NAS) systems (including support for the Network Data Management Protocol), applications, databases and data stored in the cloud. It also supports VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V sources.

Protected data is stored in what IBM calls container storage pools (not to be confused with Docker-style containers). Storage pools and replicate copies can reside on a variety of storage systems including NAS systems, block storage, virtual tape libraries (VTLs), object storage, public clouds, and tape devices. Another instance of Spectrum Protect on a server can also be a protection target. Additionally, the software includes policy-driven options for remote replication.
