IBM Cloud Object Storage – Product Analysis

IBM Cloud Object Storage (formerly Cleversafe) is an object storage system consisting of software delivered on individual hardware elements that can scale to exabytes of data. The architecture of Cloud Object Storage is based upon information dispersal across geographies, presenting a single, global namespace for objects. As one of the first object storage systems deployed in cloud access environments, IBM Cloud Object Storage has continued to add capabilities and additional usage cases.

Multiple processing elements are used in the Cloud Object Storage that disperse data, store in local file systems, and manage host access. As a software implementation, Cloud Object Storage can be delivered as software only with customer supplied hardware, as a complete integrated system, or as a managed service. In addition, Cloud Object Storage is offered in a public cloud with IBM Cloud.

IBM Cloud Object Storage or COS can store billions of data objects in a flat namespace. Access is through a REST API such as S3 using HTTP.

IBM Cloud Object Storage competes with other object storage systems / software including Scality Ring, Dell Elastic Cloud Storage, Cloudian HyperStore, NetApp StorageGRID, and Quantum ActiveScale.
